Thought Piece #2

In thought piece 2 I loved that there were a variety of images to give a bunch of examples. I do find it weird that LaBelle compared photographers to hunters. It is not necessarily a positive thing to compare considering hunters kill innocent animals. I do like that he provides ways to learn how to hunt and to use it to your advantage as a photographer no matter where, what or when you are shooting.

In comparison to that, I agree that curiosity and imagination are very vital to photographers and I like that he hit on them. I wish he talked more about how to use curiosity and imagination in different ways. I feel like it is hard to use your imagination in situations like a funeral or emotional event. This also relates to page 15 where he talks about people watching. I don't know if it is the nosiness in me or what but I have always loved people watching. You can tell a lot about a person by just simply watching them. My favorite activity when I was a little bit younger was to go to the airport overlook back home with my camera. Not only did I get to photograph the planes, but I got to see and photograph people in that environment and animals and interaction which was a blast.

That is one of the only situations where I have good patience. I find it hard to sit and wait for the moment to come to me like LaBelle talks about. It is definitely something that can be beneficial but as someone who has never had a small bit of patience it is difficult. Even though I was not given the patience gene, a “sixth sense” is very useful . In this section  LaBelle talks about the importance of having one and how it can help make or break a photograph. This relates to the idea of snapping a shot before and after. So not only capturing a moment but capturing leading up to it and even what happens after. It is freezing a moment of time that shows someone's life, values or beliefs.

On page 27 there is a picture of BB King. I absolutely love this picture and it relates to what the section is about so well. I enjoy the way he is looking into the light and it only highlights certain aspects of his face. On top of the image I enjoy how LaBelle includes the captions for the images. I would not have known the context for the image without the caption. However, I wish there was more there in the image showing that he is doing a concert and where he is doing the concert instead of just his face. A face shows emotion and they are so fun to take pictures of but sometimes it can be helpful to have more context around the subject.

At the end of this section LaBelle wrote about lighting. He referenced learning to see light as a helpful way to learn how to use lighting. I honestly wish I had learned about lighting this way. It would have gotten me into the habit of seeing how it casts shadows on or near a subject and how to utilize that to my advantage. It would have saved me a bunch of time over the years, especially when I first started out and was just snapping away and not looking into things like lighting and framing.
